HYETIES HOST SENIORS

- Murat Kazanci

On December 22, 2002, over 40 elderly members of our community took part in the Second Annual Seniors Day organized by members of HyeTies. The participants were picked up from their homes that Sunday morning and carpooled to OIA Hall where a Christmas luncheon and an afternoon of entertainment had been arranged in their honor. While HyeTies volunteers kept busy preparing and serving lunch, conversations about days gone by and boastful descriptions of grandchildren filled the room.

Soon after dessert was served, the entertainers hit the stage. A soloist began the program with a pair of classic Christmas hymns sung in Armenian. She was followed by the brother and sister team of eight year-old Raffi and nine year-old Larissa Donigian whose variety show filled with poetry, songs and comedy absolutely stole the crowd. Later, pianist Sarkis Kazaryan used his skills on the keyboard to bring the crowd to its feet. Roles were reversed as the elder guests took over the dance floor while HyeTies volunteers sat and watched in amazement.

A surprise visit from Santa completed the afternoon festivities. The Jolly One made his rounds to all of the guests, posing for photographs which were later made into greeting cards and presented to the participants as souvenirs. As the guests made their way to the cars, countless smiles and words of gratitude were more than reward enough for the HyeTies members who put the event together and a sure sign that the occasion would be repeated in the coming year.
