OIA 2003 Fall/Winter Term


The "Fall 2003 Soccer Tournament" organized by the OIA Sports Commitee began with Friday night matches at the NASL turf field. In the Juniors, Red beat Green 6-4. In the Stars, Yellow beat Blue 5-4. In the newly formed 14-30 "Youth League" the participants will be Getronagan, Sevan, Mardagerd and Sahakyan/Nunyan. The first week's results were Sahakyan/Nunyan over Sevan 9-5 and Getronagan over Mardagerd 10-7. Sahakyan/Nunyan is the first week leader on goal difference. The tournament with nearly 100 participants ranging in age from 7 to 26, will come to a close on Friday night, November 7 with the championship final.

On Wednesday, October 8, OIA Esayan Committee is organizing a panel discussion. The topic will be "Financing Higher Education". The panel will consist of Esayan alumnus and former teacher Ms. Alice Reisyan along with a representative from her firm, Walker Financial Partners.

On Saturday, October 11, OIA will celebrate its 27th anniversary. The evening's honorary guest will be his Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America. The festivities will take place at the Brandview Collection in Glendale.

The seasons main cultural event will be the "Books and Arts Festival". The second annual event will be put on by the OIA Cultural Committee. It will take place on Sunday, November 2, 2003, from 11am to 7pm. Included will be new and antique Armenian books, antique Armenian coins, postcards, maps, documentary films and documents. Some of the items on display will be for sale. A special presentation for children will include story reading and children's songs. This year, 15 businesses and organizations will take part in the event in contrast to 6 last year.

An evening to honor Bedros Zobyan (Canada), author of "Toward Bitlis With William Saroyan", previously planned by the OIA Cultural Committee has been postponed indefinitely due to the author's illness.
