On Friday evening, April 11, 2003, the OIA Cultural Committee hosted Prof. Vahakn Dadrian at its headquarters. Cultural Committee president Dr. Ohannes K. Avedikian began the evening by addressing the large audience. After briefly introducing the topic of the lecture, Dr. Avedikian invited OIA HyeTies president, Miss Jbid Cepkinian, to the podium. Her recital of "Ghoghanch Yeghernagan" drew a large ovation from the members in attendance. Dr. Avedikian continued with a brief summary of Prof. Dadrian's life and works and invited the distinguished scholar to the stage. Prof. Dadrian thanked the OIA and the Cultural Committee for the invitation and expressed his joy for having the opportunity to give the evening's lecture in Armenian. In the first of his two-part lecture, Prof. Dadrian spoke on the relationship between Ottoman and modern Turkey, the Ottoman-Russian-German relationship, and the relationship with other European nations. He supported his theories on the causes of the Genocide with documents he has examined in the Russian and German national archives. The second part of his lecture focused on efforts put forth toward international recognition of the Genocide. He also touched briefly on a symposium of Armenian and Turkish historians and scholars he attended three weeks before at the University of Minnesota. He concluded his lecture by mentioning an article by Murat Belge, published in the newspaper Radikal, which he found very influential. The audience showed its appreciation for Prof. Dadrian's lecture with a standing ovation. Discussion among audience members followed the lecture, and Prof. Dadrian closed the evening's program by signing his books--published in Armenian, English, and Turkish--for those in attendance.

Prof. Dadrian, whose visit to Los Angeles lasted five days, also gave his lecture in English at the Ararat Home Eskijian Museum on Sunday.
