PRAYERS FOR CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA RESIDENTS

ISTANBUL, 30 January 2002 ("Lraper" Church Bulletin) --

His Beatitude Mesrob II, Armenian Patriarch of
Istanbul and all Turkey, offered special prays
for the people of California and Neveda during
Matins service on 29 January. He prayed for the
safety of all people who live in the earthquake
prone region of western United States, and ask
worshippers to remember them in their prayers.

Earthquakes have been recorded in California
and Nevada during the last week. The strongest
tremor, with a magnitude of 4.2 Richter scale,
was recorded on 28 January at 21:53 hours six
miles north of Simi Valley, California.

The headquarters of the Armenian Patriarchate in
Kumkapi had suffered considerable damage on 17
August 1999. The Patriarchate complex is still
undergoing repair and renovation. The American
Armenian community and the American friends of
the Patriarchate had raised US$ 600,000 in aid,
through the efforts of the Eastern and Western
Dioceses of the Armenian Church in America and
the Organization of Istanbul Armenians in Los
Angeles. The Lincy Foundation of philanthropist
Mr Kirk Kerkorian had matched the funds raised
in the US, by contributing US$ 600,000. Following
the appeal of the Armenian Patriarch to help the
earthquake stricken inhabitants in the Gulf of
Izmit, Mr Kerkorian's Foundation had also given
US$ 1 million to the families of the Turkish
earthquake victims through the American Red
Cross and the Turkish Red Crescent.
