Second Pan-Armenian Games Launched In Yerevan
YEREVAN, AUGUST 18, ARMENPRESS: The Second Pan-Armenian Games, launched
today in Yerevan, have become the world symbol of the unification of
Armenian youth from all over the world. The grand opening took place at
the overcrowded Republican Stadium in presence of the country's top
authorities, numerous guests from abroad and more than 20,000 fans. The
Second Games are dedicated to 17 centuries of Armenia's conversion into
Christianity and the tenth anniversary of Armenia's
independence.
The all-nation importance of the Games was stressed in all welcoming
speeches. The opening ceremony began with a parade with participation of
Armenian and Diasporas best athletes which was followed by cultural
performances.
The first competitions will kick off August 19, Sunday. They will be
held in the stadiums of four Armenian towns and will include eight kinds
of sporting events: football, basketball, volley-ball, chess, swimming,
tennis, table-tennis and track and field events. The Games will close
August 26.
