General Information

The Organization of Istanbul Armenians (OIA) of Los Angeles was established in 1976 within the walls of St. Sarkis Church by a group of patriotic and innovative young Istanbul Armenians. The Organization's main goals and objectives are the following:
  1. To preserve the Armenian heritage, traditions, and culturethrough its literature, education, sports, and other benevolent methods.
  2. To provide scholarships to Armenian students and encourage their desires to continue with their higher education.
  3. To encourage athletic endeavors.
  4. To provide aid for Armenian families, students, and individuals through the assistance of advising, monetary aid, securing jobs, and help in translating and interpreting from the Armenian to English language.
  5. To encourage the further flourishing of Armenian literature through the publications of Armenian and English leaflets.
Until 1985, the Organization of Istanbul Armenians continued its work at St. Sarkis Church. During the same year, OIA became a non-profit organization and moved to a new address on Van Nuys Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley. In 1992, OIA moved once again to a more presentable building and situated itself on Sherman Way Boulevard where it continues to exist and be known to the Armenian Community of Los Angeles.Besides the Main Board, the OIA consists of other committees within it, including the Ladies Auxiliary, the Cultural Committee which publishes its bilingual "Voice" magazine, the Youth Group, the Scholarship Committee, the Esayan Alumni Committee, the Getronagan Alumni Committee, and the Mekhitarian Alumni Committee. Each of these committees' members work hard to accomplish the main goals of OIA. At the present time, OIA has nearly 1000 members. The OIA desires for more Istanbul Armenians to become members, as well as non-Istanbul Armenians to provide their assistance with their talents and abilities in order to further the progress of the Armenian community.
